Microsoft will close its encyclopedia

Microsoft Corp. will close its online encyclopedia Encarta, reports AFP. Last version of this resource will be closed in December 2009.

According to plans, Microsoft, all language versions of Encarta, excluding Japan, will be disconnected on October 31. Online encyclopedia of Microsoft in the Japanese language will close December 31.

The main reason for the closure of Encarta – change the way users of encyclopedias and other reference materials. In particular, instead of pay-Microsoft service, many resources are free to choose, for example, Wikipedia.

Encarta project was launched in 1993. Initially, the encyclopedia was distributed on CD and DVD, but later became available on the Internet on a subscription fee. Popularity Encarta slowed down in 2001, when he was running Wikipedia.

  1. I dont know anyone who uses this. I am surprised it lasted this long. I expect so much more from Microsoft.
