As someone who knows and has worked with the author, I tried to read it with as much an objective eye as possible. However, the book is really all about the author. This is not too surprising for someone who has always been a bit of a Look At Me. . . ME Me Me Type. . . so it does not surprise that this was the route she took in writing the book. The book isn’t brilliant, but it isn’t terrible either. I didn’t know she had it in her to actually write a book. The irony here is that her persona in Hollywood has always been that of one of the hard-core ‘phony’ types who she looks at as being unlike her. She has also always had a reputation for working her way upwards through the stereotypical not very honorable way that females who advance tend to be cited with and which one had hoped was just a myth or a casting-couch bygone day. So some of her crying in the book about being a genius in a sea of oafs is a little odd (also, this ‘producer’ didn’t know, in the days of her first movie job, what the Holocaust was. No kidding here. ) So I take some issue with the author. That’s clear. Otherwise, putting that aside, I do think that some passages are well done. There does tend to be some formulaic laziness. The movies overshadow the literary here in that it does tend towards the usual cookie cutter tricks, and the letter writing style unfortunately only emphasizes the ego of the author. It would have been nice to see someone else’s point of view, however, I am not sure that the author is compable of such a thing.

This book is horrible. It obnoxious, trite, predictable and the embodiment of Lifetime television for women. For. The. Love. Of. God. The letter format is lazy writing. It is also incredibly unrealistic in today’s text messaging, cell phones, etc. I was very dissapointed by the boring, sappy story. All in all, this was Danielle Steel material.

I can’t say much good about this book. Terrible. Plus– the voice of the narrator is unbearably pretentious and smug. The manipulation factor is way over the top; and is written with a show-offy name-dropping narcissism. The character of Olivia dominates the whole book, to the loss of every other more interesting character, and constantly stands center-stage screaming at the reader and those around to hear how wise she is. Much of her condescending wisdom is dead wrong. An example: when she implores her mother to take anti-anxiety drugs, condescendingly telling her that anti-anxiety drugs won’t make her an addict. Where did Robinson ger her medical degree? Isn’t it common knowledge at this point that these drugs ARE addictive? The three good lines in the book have appeared in every single positive review, over and over again. Besides these, it appears that the book moved forward based on the overwhelming push by the publisher (publishing is real estate, and Little,Brown bought huge ad space in mags and box displays in book stores. Plus, the dumbed down world of chic lit was looking for something that could make them feel ’smart. ‘ Throw in death and a character who needs to tell you every other page how much more brilliant she is than those dopes in hollowood–and I guess you’ve created an audience of the like minded, who read this and think they’ve discovered literature. Just dreadful.

I love this book. I laughed, and I cried. I was happy I was sad. It made me look at life so much different after I read it! It was werid at first to get use to the fact that the whole story was writen in letter form but then I loved it. I couldn’t put the book down. I read it in 2 days and I hope she plans to write some more!
